WHO I AM?
Luis Soto bases his artistic production on abstract art, and shows us precisely that – abstraction lacking any recognizable figuration of the real world. Instead, he leads us to pause, to contemplate, freeing us from any literalness, with an open invitation to reflect on expression from an individual and subjective perspective.
Using a color palette that always moves forward, Luis doesn’t use shy or subtle tones, but rather pits them against each other. The black backgrounds and strong vibrant tones convey various emotions. His bold and energetic brushstrokes act like visual punches hitting the canvas, creating a sense of strength and determination.
There are no subtleties, it’s all vigor and rawness, a challenge that invites the viewer to question what they see. Luis explores the idea of immersion, conveying sensations that go beyond the visual.
In his work, the artist speaks of the individual immersed in society and culture. This is the central theme of his thinking, the social mandates that oppress that individual daily. Whites that give a sense of openness or space, at times scarce red tones in the form of straight lines crossing, like two paths meeting, may suggest the clash of that subject with another or society, followed by changes, adaptation, and breakthroughs.
Being an artist who openly works with abstract art is a bold choice, as it gives others the freedom to say what they want, because ultimately there is free interpretation of the emotionality with which the artist expresses themselves in their work, and yet the discourse will always be what the artist decides for themselves, but isn’t that always the case with art?
